It took exactly one second — or his first beat, his first head shake, the first glint of the stage lights on his trademark beard — for Chet Faker to win over the crowd at Mack Sennett Studios Saturday night. Faker was headlining the penultimate concert of Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days In LA, with New York CIty artists denitia and sene and LA-based pop group James Supercave.
While Faker’s music has been earning high marks (and awards) since 2011, when he released a surprisingly soulful and also modern take on Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity,’ his recordings (both on his 2014 album Built on Glass and his earlier EP Thinking in Textures) feature subdued, mood-setting beats. In the live setting those same beats explode, and Faker with them — followed closely by the crowd.
