Can Taoism sound psychedelic? The young neo-psychedelic rock band Chui Wan (吹万) got their name from Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi’s classic piece “Qi Wu Lun”. The main concept of this piece is that the nature and everything in the universe can be united and mirrored by the mind. Chui Wan’s music, whether or not directly inspired by this ancient Chinese wisdom, is really a new kind of neo-psychedelic rock that sounds weirdly good and sometimes eastern, or just a great one for tripping.
Since their formation in 2010, Chui Wan has been an active member in the emerging underground music scene in Beijing, China. In 2012, they released their debut album “White Night” under Maybe Mars, one of the best indie/experimental music labels in China. And next year in May, they’re going to play at Austin Psych Fest. Definitely one of the exciting new sounds from China.
