This is my first post, so I feel it’s fitting to tell you a little bit about myself. I am Charles I (Pronounced “Charles the first”). I am a lover of all styles of music, and I’m here to share some of the music that I love and my perspective on it.
When I produce music, mostly it’s dark-sounding electronic house-ish music. And so, although I will be presenting many different styles of music in future posts, as my first playlist, I’ve prepared a list of songs that reflect my vantage point in the musical landscape.
The artists on this list create an aesthetic that I admire and try to emulate in my own music. The attitude is dark, often times reflecting a kind of refined cynicism. They are visually provocative and contain sparse (or non-existent) use of lyricism and tunefulness. The focus is rhythm and texture and the rest is superfluous.
What draws me to this style of music most of all is what I perceive as a strict adherence to design principles. It seems to me that for artists like Daniel Avery, Danny Daze, and Light Year, the abstract aspects of the music guide the compositional choices, rather than allowing words or meaning to be the focus of the track. It is a reduction. Only the essential elements remain.
If cold, borderline-pretentious techno is not your cup of tea, fear not! Next week I will have a list of completely different songs to share but always with a description that reflects my cold, cynical self.
