As I entered the main room at The Fillmore, Homeboy Sandman was spitting lyrics faster than an auctioneer. His breakneck rhymes penetrated and filled a new generation of hip-hop listeners with knowledge. As his set progressed, he continued to build up hype in preparation for Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic.
By the time Rob and Aesop hit the stage, the crowd was in a frenzy. Beer filled hands began swaying back and fourth in the air with enough spillage to get those around them drunk. DJ Abilities scratching was a masterful blur of hand movements that seemed to be traveling at hyper-speed. Truly unreal!
Aesop and Rob even took a step back at one point to let him go into cutting up tracks like a hot samurai sword through butter. The crowd was so engaged you could almost see each lyric pulling the sweat from their brows. The duo’s performance was nothing short of breath taking. Playing all the jams from each album and also some new shit that most haven’t probably ever heard, they definitely came out ready to blow the place up.
I know there are a lot of us that may not have listen to Aesop or Rob Sonic in the past few years, but without a doubt thats all I can play on my speakers at home today!
