Nadine Boughton is a collage artist, a photographer, a poet and something else you probably wouldn’t guess, a teacher – she teaches photography, creative writing, and of course, collage art where she resides in Gloucester, MA. Brought up in Rochester, NY, beneath the gaze of George Eastman’s Kodak Tower, she also studied photography with Garry Winogrand, and at Visual Studies Workshop. There is a certain perspective and design aesthetic that goes into being a collage artist, it wasn’t even until we started the magazine that I even understood the level of fluid intricacy and meshing of different mediums that it takes to pull off a great collage piece. Men’s adventure magazines of the 1950’s and early 1960’s are shocking, funny, ambiguously rich artifacts of popular culture, and that is probably why Boughton chooses many of her pieces from them. She doesn’t try to mix too many mediums that are from different time periods but rather from the same time periods but different scenes, collectively speaking to the reader through the moment she is trying to convey by the action, or inaction, within the finished piece.
Her work has been exhibited at Photo Center Northwest, Seattle,WA, Newspace Center for Photography, Portland, OR, RayKo Photo Center,San Francisco, CA, Davis Orton Gallery, Hudson, NY, and Panopticon Gallery, Photographic Resource Center, Griffin Museum of Photography, Danforth Museum of Art, in the Boston area. Not only that but her work has been featured on-line in Lenscratch, Plates to Pixels, and Flavorwire. She was also an IRIS lecturer 2012, at The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles, CA.
