Livio Scarpella brings stone to life. Like the great marble sculptors of the Renaissance, Livio explores draping and theatrical emotion in his series “Ghosts Underground”. By including the rough, unaltered pieces of rock in the heart of his figures, Livio reminds the viewer that even the seemingly soft draping is all marble. Other aspects, such as the small pin holding the fabric together, bring the ancient faces to life. Inspired by the famous veiled sculptures that rest in the Cappella Sansevero, a chapel in the historic center of Naples, Italy, Livio divides the figures into the ‘blessed’ and the ‘dammed’, placing either a light or dark quartz.
