There has been quite the frenzy for mermaid photography as of late. I wanted to throw my two cents into the pile of sequins and tight fitting homemade tails, but with oil thrown all over it. Environmental issues are picking up traction in our daily discussions (thank God) and it can be hard to feel like we’re making a difference in the effort to save ourselves from self induced annihilation. I decided to articulate my concerns in the only way I felt able: through art. I thought the irony of combining a subject matter we often see in photography nowadays with one of the oldest crimes against Earth was a way to bring this issue even into our imaginations while we photograph and create. Kate is a refreshingly strong and passionate person who cares about this subject matter just as much as I do. And she’s also a mermaid. And she’s down to roll around in the freezing water while I throw black paint at her face. So we make a perfect team. Enjoy.
