Jose Espínola, a photographer/filmmaker based on Mexico City, recently went out to the desert to shoot his firs exclusive for NAKID titled “The Alchimist“. We asked Jose to explain the idea behind his shoot, he had this to say, “The desert as the obstacle that stands between people and their dreams, dry, empty, harsh, with no life. Water as the source of generation of all life, fertil, infinite, vast, rich to possibilities. The alchemist, a ritualistic dancer that plays to create the balance, to make both coexist, to serve as barriers between the continents and the nations of the world. The medium between life and death. It explores the extremes to become a path able to cross, the direction of man. A woman spirit with a sensitive courage to give life a meaning.”

A Visual Artist, Jose Espínola works in both still and motion photography as well as paper-cut collage. He directs and produces video & photo, developing creative projects for brands, editorial publications as well as collaborations with designers and visual artists at Brutal Inc a multidisciplinary studio which he founded in 2010.

Jose Academyc background in Communications combined with a Degree in Graphic Design and Art Direction, had lead him to find a strong visual aesthetic that smooths between Documentary and Fine Art Photography. In his work he uses the raw immediacy of the images as a cognitive tool, exploring the corelation between erotism, fashion and the social enviroment. Using collective signifires, memories, to create compositions that creates strong imagery that reflects society and ourselves. Driven to find a story where one doesn’t seem to be, with a solid vision of aesthetics, Jose establishes some kind of mutual undersanding with his subjects and the atmospheres with captivating empathy, haunting the public intimacy, evocating the private, and empowering genuine sexuality with fashion. His work has been published in several magazines such as: Wallpaper Magazine, Suitcase Magazine, Victory Magazine, Hotbook, P Magazine, I-D, Código, Travesias, Animal, Lensculture y F-Stop Magazine, Sticks and Stones. Also he´s work has been in Taipei Contemporary Art Center.
