FLOAT FEST BRINGS EVERYTHING WE LOVE ABOUT SUMMER INTO ONE EVENT {FESTIVALS/ EVENTS}

It is hard times in Texas and by that I mean its hot times in Texas. The fact that one can actively stay outside for longer than an hour is an accomplishment worth mentioning on any resume. Yet, there is a festival down in San Marcos that combines everything that is awesome about the Summer in one event. It makes you almost not care about the 100+ degree weather. Float Fest is a music festival that brings you the opportunity to enjoy your favorite musical acts, while floating the river or riding a Ferris wheel. Like Carnaval but surrounded by water and with Rick Ross yelling in the background ‘My Bitch Bad Looking like a Bag of Money’.

It was 3 in the afternoon on Saturday and me and Anayancy walk down to the river where all the festival goers are getting ready to float the river. We went down to get a better idea of how it was done and to get few pictures. Everyone down there was overly prepared for this adventure, coolers full of beer, speakers attached to their tube and some even had some tubes so big they could fit a small family in them. I was not prepared, partially because I was not planning on floating the river till the day after. But after drinking a few beers with a couple locals, they convinced me to grab a tube and just go, so me and Anayancy just went for it. Once we got in, it was partially fun, partially painful. I had a giant waterproof bag with me and a camera. So it wasn’t the most comfortable. I thought I’ll just get off on the next exit in like 30mts. NOPE. No exits until the end of the river, 3 hrs away. So nothing else better to do then just smoke a blizzy and let the river lead me.  The next day  I had the entire crew with me, it was their first time too. So at this point I felt like a boyscout leader, I had my rope to attach us all, I had sunblock, a speaker, a cooler filled with beerritas and lonestar, somehow I managed to get it all in this train of tubes that made it all so much easier to float. It was great, we could hear the music at the distance, we could interact with other tubers to take shots or pictures.

After the river, food and music was all that was in our minds. We moved to the festival grounds and Yeasayer is already on, I’ve waited years to see this band live again. Walking up to the stage I hear  “Yeah, yeah, we can all grab at the chance to be handsome farmers

“Yeah, yeah, we can all grab at the chance to be handsome farmers
Yeah, you can have twenty-one sons and be blood when they marry my daughters” I recognize the song, grabbed my camera and ran straight to the stage. Their sound is still as mystical and abstractly rhythmic. Their older songs transported me to the 2000’s when Indie rock was the most blogged genre in the world.

Following the uplifting spirit of Yeasayer, we moved on to Santigold. With a vintage puffy hair style, and a bright yellow dress with a 99c logo in it, she came out swinging. Her exuberating energy was contagious from the front line to the very last, all the colors of her outfits and her fluorescent backdrops just had this bright engrossing aura around the whole stage. The 99c concept carried so immaculately through the entire set with Shopping cart and dollar store props, it was clever. ‘Big Mouth’ was the big set off, I’ve never seen so many white people attempt to move their hips to such fast beat. Comical but contagious, it had me thinking I was a Rio Carnival dancer. Is the power of music, the power of Santigold.

Rick Ross aka Yung Renzel, the man himself. El Papi Gordo, the man is a legend and has all the machinery necessary to prove so. Hit after hit Rick Ross delivered a performance so fueled by swag and egoism. He did not miss a beat. You don’t really know how many hit songs the rapper has until you are there to hear the compilation. It’s endless. He seemed content to be on stage, he felt the reciprocating voices in the audience, and showed the city of San Marcos love on stage and all over his Instagram to all of his 5mil followers.
