Photography Alexander Langberg – Interview by Carolin Meyer

Alexander Langberg‘s work seems to live in the spontaneous, but looking beyond that you can see in the randomness that there is a structure all Langberg’s, whether it be in the photographs, or the sound and videos he creates, it’s his. NAKID contributor Carolin Meyer caught up with Langberg to chat…

Where are you from? Where do you live?

Born 1980 in Halle (Saale) in Germany. I live in Leipzig, also in Germany.

Have you always wanted to become an artist?

I have always taken photographs but I kind of started doing art out of boredom. When I was 22 years old I gave up my job working at a construction site and decided to do art.

Which artist are you inspired by/ who do you like?

I am inspired by what is around me, by what I see. The world is my sketchbook and I just have to point my camera at the world.

Did you go to art school or what did you do after having finished school?

I started going to an art school in 2001 when I was 21 in Schwerin to study Graphic Design. I finished there in 2003 and worked and lived in Rostock, Schwerin and Berlin until 2008. Then I went to the Academy of Fine Arts (HGB in short and german) in Leipzig to study Media Art and Fine Arts until 2015. I now have a diploma with honors in Fine Art.

What is your spirit animal?

It ranges between rat, fish, wolf and bear.

What kind of art do you make?

I’ve been taken pictures since I was a boy and I make collages as well as sounds and videos. I also paint. I guess I went from static pictures to moving pictures. So from photographs/paintings to films.

Has going to HGB (Hochschule für Graphik und Buchkunst) helped you doing art?

Yes, because you have free development there and you can use all the ateliers and workshop rooms. You are very free there.

What advice do you have for young artists to make it?

Work and show your work! Don’t be afraid to show your work! Be part of projects.

Where can you see some of your art at the moment?

One of my photographies is exhibited at a park called Clara-Zetkin in Leipzig in the Art Walk where there is shown a selection of very big photographies. And a few of my Collages, photographies and other art works are to be seen at the re- and upcycle shop „Catch As Catch Can“ in Leipzig. I will also participate in the Urban Festival for Art and Culture called CityCrash in the end of July in Leipzig.
