Who is Luke Jenner? Who is Meditation Tunnel? Fifteen years ago Luke Jenner was wasted and afraid, missing his family, waking up on tour busses and hotel rooms feeling really lonely. Ten years ago Luke managed to stay sober for the first day, and still is now. Seven years ago Luke took time off from work to learn how to be a father and a husband. He had no clue how to do these things and had to seek out mentors outside music and tour busses. Now Luke is back ready to have a different experience in the world. Luke doesn’t want to forget what he has learned and who he has become. There is a spiritual component to this guy, but not in a conventional way, sure he went to church and learned to pray with nuns, but now days spiritual feels like more of a connection to feeling, god is a feeling, not an idea. It’s not getting wasted someplace with people you don’t know. It’s not being stuck at someones house and trying to figure out how to get back for lobby call for a 7:00 am flight to Dusseldorf. Seven years ago Luke didn’t know how to complete his own music in the studio, he was at the mercy of really good people, but at mercy none the less. After spending time with friends like Barnt and Joakim, watching day after day what these guys do, who they are, Luke made up his own ideas about what Meditation Tunnel could be. Luke has real friends now, not to say that the old friends were not real, but the new ones are different. Luke is different, the music is a little different, but the core is the same. There is just less stuff in the way this time. The Rapture ’s Luke Jenner ventures firmly into the dance floor, this time in full force, on Glittering Jewel, the Brooklyn­based producer’s debut EP under his Meditation Tunnel guise. Following his initial outing, La La La , on Life and Death’s vinyl­only sub­label, Blitz Series, Glittering Jewel sees Jenner step up with three outsider cuts, dripping in personality. Cloaked subtly into the backdrop, Jenner’s unmistakable croon features throughout the disk ­ a highlight across the board. While dilapidated drum machines, crunched beyond recognition, propel the record into techno territory, Glittering Jewel retains the artist’s bespoke youthful sense of blue­eyed naiveté. Red Axes come through with an unclassifiable, stripped­down reinterpretation of Fire Fly, the perfect pair to deconstruct and re­contextualize the original material.
