ELECTRONIC-SOUL ARTIST ‘MADDEE’ DROPS HER NEW SINGLE ‘CLOUDS’ FROM UPCOMING NEW ALBUM ‘RED MIND’ {NEW MUSIC FRIDAYS}

If you haven’t heard of her, you have now, and this twenty-year-old electronic-soul artist is reaching out to her generation through a sound and style that not only exemplifies her range in vocal talent but that she can do something different and do it amazingly! MADDEE, who, following performances alongside Charlotte Day Wilson as well as releases with tipped producers, Shagabond and Harrison, releases her new single, ‘Clouds’ that is intoxicatingly dreamy. Taken from the forthcoming debut six-track EP, ’Red Mind’, which is due for release this coming Fall, the new single finds MADDEE expanding on her previous sound to introduce a gripping network of jazz-indebted R&B and slap-back electronica.

Her earlier singles were released via Beatnik Creative (Arlo Parks, Palace) and earned the Toronto-based artist/photographer support at the likes of The Fader and Majestic Casual, as well as slots opening for Lil Yachty, Tennyson and Willow Smith – these tracks grabbed the attention of Red Bull Sound Select who handpicked her as a spotlight artist, joining the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD, River Tiber and Jazz Cartier.

Briefly speaking, ‘Clouds’ is a lucid, jazz-infused number that draws on a compelling web of hip-hop, R&B and electronica for its foundations – it arrives co-produced by MADDEE and Gray Rowan (The WAYO, Charlotte Day Wilson). Speaking about the track, which further evidences why MADDEE is becoming a prominent name amongst Toronto’s emerging jazz-R&B scene also home to the likes of MorMor and Daniel Caesar, she says:

“It was the very first song Gray Rowan and I made together. Gray sent me the track and I immediately fell in love with the vibe and wrote and recorded vocals to it the next day. This track was the start of a really cool new evolution of my music so we continued to work together over that summer and fall. We would spend super long nights in the studio writing these tracks and we became good friends and eventually created a really awesome co-production / writing team.

Thematically, the ‘Red Mind EP’ deals with the ramifications of a negative relationship and the emotions that MADDEE felt throughout that period, from love to infatuation and naivety. Speaking about ‘Clouds’, which features the co-production of Gray Rowan (Charlotte Day Wilson, The WAYO) and coasts along to the groove of off-kilter percussion and stuttering organs, MADDEE says: “This song was written about getting over an unhealthy relationship. It’s about coming back to myself and my strength.”

MADDEE cut her teeth initially with features on the ‘Colours EP’ from Toronto-based producer, Harrison – from here, she picked up slots opening for the likes of Lil’ YachtyWillow Smith and Tennyson, alongside which she showcased across festivals including SXSW, NXNE and Field Trip. A pair of debut singles were released in 2017 (produced by Toronto’s Birthday Boy and Shagabond respectively), earning the buzz-building artist tips from tastemaker blogs, Majestic Casual and the attention of Red Bull Sound Select who handpicked her as one their spotlight artists.
