Artist and singer-Songwriter Drue de Milo releases a set of three poems she has written exclusively for today’s NAKID feature editorial titled, ‘Have you ever seen a sunset?‘, ‘hey… are you free?’ and ‘Got a pen?’. ‘GOT A PEN’
“Tried to make breakfast
But I burned it
Not really that hungry anyway
There’s a lesson somewhere in there
But I don’t care to learn it
Try again? Don’t force your hand?
Are you insane?
You told me you wanna put your name on it
Baby that’s real cute I got a pen
Swear I hear an ice cream truck
Hold that thought
Breathe for once
I don’t need to fall in love just yet
You look like delayed gratification
I’m so glad
I’m not inside your head
If I could put you on the stove….
If I could put you on the stove…
I hope there’s room in the freezer”
“HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A SUNSET”
“Drop all your defenses
For a minute and you’ll see—
Or not.
I don’t give a fuck.
Was gonna pluck this dandelion,
But it’s starting to rain
And wishes don’t mean much of anything to me these days…
You asked how I was feeling
“‘cause you’re laughing…”
How I’m feeling is:
I want to roll my eyes and surf and smoke.
And sing about the sunset;
Have you ever seen a sunset?
do you pity it for wanting to be beautiful?
And admired just for that
or do you worry?
That sun will somehow stop feeding the trees?
By the time you’re finished speculating,
assessing, and, exaggerating….
We’re kissing like it’s August in the morning.
He wakes me up and takes me right
Without saying a word.
His back is —
Oh my god.
As if I needed proof of god,
He presses on my hips
And bites my lip and pulls my curls.
I’m utterly defenseless in his orbit.
He’s embarrassed ‘cause he’s fully whipped by mine.
The pull of something beautiful –
Yeah, we’re both really beautiful –
The pull of something beautiful
wins every. single. time.
My eyes out wit her cleverness,
His smile beats up your pride,
And my earnest, patient, generous “thanks”
Destroys her jealous “why”
His “sorry, I was distracted” trumps your “I vow to do it right”
On second thought,
Keep your defenses.
You’ll need em,
Alone,
Again
Tonight.”
“HEY ARE YOU FREE”
“He called me dirty names,
And it was everything I needed.
The earth turns kinda slowly right?
We don’t even feel it.
And I got so damn much to do
I got no business near it
But the pull I’m feeling lately
For the way you pull my hair….
on my side.
On the side—
Are you free?
Cuz I’ve breathing water tryina neutralize my body
And I took a hundred showers, right?
But I still smell you on me
Please don’t talk
It’s a lie
You don’t have to say you want me
It’s too hard.
What’s the point?
Are you free?
Resisting is a motherfucker;
easy way to lose.
I should know;
I’ve lost love and sleep, my own mind over you.
Nothing left
I accept –
Except –
