‘Busted’, the new video/single from Freak Heat Waves – it’s out today and comes a week before their new album Zap The Planet which is out Sep 4 via Telephone Explosion Records (Pantayo, Badge Époque Ensemble).
The new record is the first from the pair since relocating within Canada – previously they were both based in Victoria, BC, but Zap The Planet finds one member moving to Montreal and therefore the record is another example of how the band like to push the envelope with their experimentation. ‘Busted’ is a prime example of their new sonic approach incorporating fizzing synthesisers and uncanny atmospherics. Samples were sent back and forth across the country rather than jammed out/written together so there’s something eerie and sparse in there which, to an extent, I feel is representative of the distance between them.
Earlier releases from the pair picked up support in both the US, Europe and Canada, with 2018’s Beyond XXXL finding tips with yourselves at The FADER, Brooklyn Vegan, KEXP, FLOOD, etc and the pair opening for the likes of Suuns, Odonis Odonis, Mattiel, METZ and Preoccupations– previous releases found the duo tackling a more rudimentary, guitar/bass/drums post-punk sound, but I believe Zap The Planet really pushes the needle a little more. I think the band are doing something pretty cool with their sound and how they like to tie atmospherics/sonics into the aesthetic/theme of the album – there’s this feeling of dissonance and feeling at ends with yourself that comes across not only in the visuals and music, but also in the album’s overarching concept.
