STATS, the new Elton John and Phoebe Waller-Bridge-loved project, is the brainchild of Ed Seed who is also the touring guitarist with Dua Lipa and La Roux, is out with their new single ‘Naturalise Me’. The London-based group releases the new single alongside announcing details of their second record ‘Powys 1999′ which is out via Memphis Industries on November 12.
The first Stats record was tipped by NME (2019’s Album of the Year list), The Line of Best Fit, BBC 6 Music, Sunday Times, PopMatters, and more with the album being recorded over the space of two days whilst Seed was on a break from touring duties with Dua Lipa. The return to the fray with Stats comes with ‘Naturalise Me’, a resounding disco-funk jam that finds comparisons in my mind to the sounds of LCD Soundsystem, Confidence Man, etc, with its boisterous synths, rigorous percussion, and cosmic disco-pop aesthetic.
This new record finds its name in the location it was recorded: Powys, Wales, which is close to where Seed grew up as a child. Thematically the new record and this first single, ‘Naturalise Me’, get to grips with Seed’s childhood but not necessarily in a saccharine or overly-nostalgic manner, it draws on memories, but it also draws on the growing pains of being brought up in rural Wales as very much an outsider. Similarly, it looks at the socio-political discourse as to why his parents decided to relocate from Manchester to the countryside. Interestingly, Seed tackles a lot of conflicting ideas on this new record, namely the natural world vs the unnatural world, the countryside versus the city, and our perceptions of what’s seen as real and on the contrary, what’s seen as fake – he disperses these ideas into his music, dressing his curious observations in the guise of glittering electro-pop.
