After releasing his highly successful debut album Lavender God, ATTLAS returns to mau5trap for his second LP in one years time, Out Here With You. A sweltering progressive collection of emotionally in-tune tracks, ATTLAS’s 10-song Out Here With You debuts in full on Friday, November 6 via the deadmau5-run label.
Over the course of the past four years, ATTLAS has become one of mau5trap’s most celebrated artists. Canadian musician Jeff Hartford’s enthusiasm for music began at a young age, he grew up playing in bands and learning instruments like piano, trumpet, and guitar. His immersion in songwriting continued to grow when he attended university, and he interned for a composer after completing his courses. It was during this time that he started applying the techniques he’d learned in the studio to electronic music and began sending his completed works to deadmau5’s mau5trap label. The label initially signed a few tracks and then ATTLAS as an artist, and Hartford released three EPs in 2015 via the Canadian imprint. In the years since then, he’s delivered singles, EPs, and remixes – all showcasing the textured, introspective sound he’s spent years cultivating. 2019 brought exciting new developments to the ATTLAS journey, including a new installment of his lauded Storyline series and a debut album. The album “synthesized all the experiences and wandering paths that ATTLAS walks,” according to Hartford, bringing together heavier sounds and the emotive melodies he’s built his musical brand on. 2020 has proven difficult for everyone; Hartford included who was forced to cancel his Lavender God Tour, named for his debut album. Rather than focusing on the missed opportunities, Jeff has taken this year to dive even deeper into his musical craft. After a few one off releases and several remixes, including a captivating melodic single “The Night Air Was Cool,” Jeff is set to release his second album at the top of November. The latest album, which will be called Out Here With You, encompasses the shift in the music industry and the way we’re digesting music without live touring. Rawer and more intimate than ever before, Out Here With You is Jeff’s way of showing his fans and the world that we are not alone during this troubling time and that were all trying to navigate the state of the current world together.
Making music for the times, ATTLAS’ Out Here With You is a mellifluous breath of air. ATTLAS (real name Jeff Hartford) traverses through motifs of helplessness and unfettering positivity in times needed the most. Reflective and serene, Out Here With You is for the now. A euphonious blend of each imposing facet of the producers impressive playbook, Out Here With You is ATTLAS at his musical best. His critically acclaimedLavender God received high praise from C-Heads Magazine, Cool Hunting, DJ Times, and Billboard Dance, with Magnetic Magazine calling the album “listening bliss.”
A mesmerizing introductory track titled “Morning Fields” beckons listeners into ATTLAS’ Out Here With You from the get-go, as crescendoing synths stir up a spellbinding, visceral response. Unfurling into a sweetly serene “Polar Concept,” the same spoken vocals that bled out the intro now guide peacefully into a melodic whirlwind of synths. Fluttering sounds akin to a heartbeat keep pace in “Uour,” as ATTLAS showcases his meticulous production style throughout.
Track five, “Seabreeze,” is full-bodied in buoyancy. Colliding synth work and melodic progressions make for a warm, transient feeling of utter bliss in sound. “Seabreeze” moves seamlessly into “When We Were The Same,” a textured treat with an infectious kick. The seven-minute and forty-six second slow burning journey traverses through a mirage of lush soundscapes, as ATTLAS’ knack for creative evocative music shines throughout. “In A Cloud” features an old-timey spoken word opening, quickly launching into an oscillating backsound full of honeyed guitar riffs. Highly reflective in nature, “Ponds” sees ATTLAS blend his powerful hand in electronic harmonies with raw piano melodies to create an introspective offering.
Juxtaposing twinkling synths and deep bass, “MGT” is an other-worldly track, set to transport listeners to a place beyond the pines with its gorgeous build. The final offering from ATTLAS’ Out Here With You is aptly titled single “Out There With You,” a ten-minute score. Melodic staccato synths parade from the onset, as ATTLAS moves through this progressive sendoff with heart. Each build and release is unique in its own way, and serves as a seemingly never-fading beacon of light. An empowering ode to looking for moments of goodness, Out Here With You is the wondrous second studio offering from mau5trap’s first ever label signee.
