Photographer Aliona Kuznetsova shot these beautiful self-portraits for today’s exclusive NAKID feature editorial titled, ‘Moi-Meme’.

It’s been a year since the first lockdown in San Francisco, and it has seemed the longest year of Aliona’s life, she tells us. Instead of flying to Europe to shoot fashion editorials as she had planned in 2020, she was quite worried about going to the grocery store instead like us all. Rather than visiting show openings, she was browsing Pinterest to find little drops of inspiration. She calls her 2020 pandemic experience ‘claustrophobic’ in many ways.

“As a woman fashion photographer, I always saw a big gap between my own appearance and those of the models I worked with. I look fine, but I am so very far from the tall, impossibly beautiful women in my fashion editorials. Then I thought to myself, am I such a bad photographer that I can only photograph these exceptional women? Surprisingly, I was not at all “the person I know best.” I was completely detached from how my body looked. As a child, I was taught that I am only what I can offer intellectually. So it has been a long, vulnerable, sometimes uncomfortable process of peeling off my insecurities and biases to include myself in my work.”
