Photographer Ruby Bowman traveled the country during pandemic to shoot this new series for today’s exclusive NAKID feature editorial titled, ‘Behind Her Bedroom Door‘.
Ruby Bowman, a filmmaker and photographer from Austin Texas, is an award-winning film director. At the age of fifteen, she was nominated for best short at The All-American High School Film Festival. Since then she has won multiple awards as a filmmaker including at the NYC Indie Film Awards, Mindfield Film Festival L.A., Girls Impact World Film Festival, and L.A. Short Awards. In 2018, her short film “Let Me Eat Cake” was chosen to be featured on the Jumbo-tron at Austin City Limits Music Festival before the performances of Travis Scott and other artists. Her work encompasses themes of feminism, beauty standards, political activism, and magical realism. She is inspired most by music and her muses.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bowman transitioned to photography due to her inability to film safely. This project led her on a cross-country road trip through six states, where she would use Instagram and impromptu meetings to find real women (not agency models). Her goal was to capture the “isolated female mind,” exploring themes of anxiety, melancholia, and feminine relationships during quarantine. Bowman’s process involved requesting the models to “truly scream” and release their darkest energies while photographing the models in front of a green screen. The backgrounds and foregrounds of the women were subsequently animated, transporting the women into a fictional world that the artist sees as a visual reflection of the female subconscious.
