‘THE AFTERNOON OF A FAUN’ A NEW VISUAL STORY BY PHOTOGRAPHER ‘OMAR (AL-SAMADI) – ABANDONED AFFAIR’

Toronto, Canada-based photographer Omar (Al-Samadi), better known as Abandoned Affair, and model Mary-Dora Bloch-Hansen teamed up for today’s exclusive NAKID feature editorial titled, ‘The Afternoon of a Faun‘.  This new series is an editorial which captures the exploration of gender liminal expression through the archetype of a mystical and shy Faun awakening to embrace their playful, erotic and queer identity through movement, imagery and gesture. Inspired by beauty and connection with nature, the Faun explores the limits of their body as a ritualistic practice while weaving in and out of unbound, fluid and soft states of physical expression, pleasure and euphoria. This editorial is part of a multidisciplinary performative work-in-progress that aims to reimagine Nijinsky’s iconic ballet, ‘The Afternoon of a Faun’, through a queer and gender expansive lens. The ballet was first performed in Paris in 1912.

Mary-Dora (the Faun) is a gender fluid, multi-disciplinary artist working primarily with movement and the body through performance. Their work centers on the body as a queer political landscape of resistance, hedonism and ritual.

Omar works primarily with film, they shoot in varying styles ranging between landscape, architecture, portraiture, and photojournalism. Omar enjoys working with narratives and capturing images and subjects “as they are”. They strive to find beauty where least expected . . . in the mundane nature of day-to-day life.
