Today we have a special treat, the drop of LA-based DJ FEI FEI and her new single ‘I AM DRUGS‘ out today via Pussy Pop! Fei-Fei is a feminist-punk renegade. With a die-hard passion for both the underground and femme representation in dance music, her latest track ‘I AM DRUGS’ is an unholy three-way of alternative punk, hyper-pop, and acid techno.
Its cheeky lyrics, feral energy, and throbbing acid line make “I AM DRUGS” an intoxicating techno anthem. The opening line “Get in loser, we’re going to party,” straps you in for a hallucinatory rollercoaster ride reminiscent of 1999’s classic rave movie Go.
“It revels in the precarious moment you’re about to make a very bad decision— the ‘oh shit’ moment right before you go tumbling down the rabbit hole… and it’s about to get real. But don’t worry, it’s like a fun fever. And there’s only one thing to do…” -Fei-Fei
With previous releases on Toolroom, Vandit, and Armada Records, official remixes for industry heavyweights such as BANKS, Basement Jaxx, ODESZA, and Tiësto, to her debut album Pretty Girls Don’t Hallucinate reaching #13 on iTunes, Fei-Fei embodies the spirit of independence and has never created art within the constraints of a specific genre or ideology. Fueled by the powerful realization of her own strength as an Asian woman in dance music, Fei-Fei says:

“My artistic practice as Fei-Fei is about taking the weird and different things I love and combining them in strange ways, making new sounds that addict me.” -Fei-Fei
Fei-Fei’s revival of her iconic alias has been nothing short of incredible. She is a beacon of strength for femme, non-binary, queer, and BIPOC producers—founder of PUSSY POP, her own label and event series, and member of Hyperweeknd, a femme alt-pop writer & producer collective. Rightfully garnering support from DJ Mag, Billboard, LA Weekly, NYLON, and Bloomberg, she manifests marching to the beat of one’s own drum with her genre-bending productions, and has even received death threats for defying fan expectations in her DJ sets – most notably Armin Van Buuren’s A State of Trance 550 Los Angeles. Now, Fei-Fei embarks on an exciting voyage with plenty of new music and new endeavors for herself and her PUSSY POP imprint on the horizon.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:
Hey Fei-Fei, thanks for joining us. Can you tell our audience a little more about yourself?
I make acid bops and slut anthems.
Congrats on the new single, love how provocative and bold the title is. What’s the thought process behind that?
I’m irresistible and I’ll fuck you up. And you’ll love every second of it.
What exactly is a ‘feminist-punk-renegade’?
I support and elevate other femme artists in my community. I care about encouraging others to write, produce, and engineer their own music. I’m not afraid to make my own sound. And I don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks.
Techno.. Trance.. Acid.. It seems like you don’t quite fit into any singular genre of music. Is that intentional?
It’s what comes out of me. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m taking the weird and different things I love and combining them in strange ways, making new sounds that addict me. I’m making music that I’m obsessed with.
As a veteran of the music industry (recording/touring), what would you say is the biggest change you’ve seen over the last decade?
I’m stoked to see more femme artists and producers making their own music. Like actually making their own music. UGH. But there’s such a long way to go. The industry needs to get its shit together, practice what they preach and put more femme artists in their lineups, hire more femme engineers and producers in their sessions, and also equal pay! Why is that so hard to understand? It’s so basic.
As an Asian artist, what does it mean to be able to represent your people on the global stage?
Representation matters so much. Seeing is believing. It’s so important for me to be a role model and inspire other Asian artists like myself. When I was first coming up, everyone had this scarcity mindset, like “watch out, so-and-so’s coming to take your spot” as if there could only be one woman or one Asian DJ or producer. I hate that. I want an army of us out here screaming and kicking down the doors. We’re coming for you.
Big plans for your label Pussy Pop this year?
It’s slut season. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Give a piece of advice for all the rising/aspiring female artists out there.
Be fearless, be yourself, and don’t listen to what anyone else says.
