Nestled away in the hotel room of one of Glasgow’s higher-end establishments photographer Liam Boath finds himself with “TightShinyRubber”, a fetishist from Berlin here on business, whose identity has been kept hidden at their request. The concept behind the shoot, Identität. (Identity).
Typical of Liam’s work and brand codes. The two strike up an effortless conversation, discussing the world of kink, fetish, and sex. They come to tease out two main points:
The world of kink and fetish are demonized in the “normal” world when ironically these are the people being their truest selves.
The world of kink and fetish, although gaining more mainstream attention… (think Balenciaga’s resort 2023, their Fall 2022 Couture, and Dior’s cinched trench coat FW 2022 Prêt-àporter to name a few)… are rarely given the professional lens and framing (Liam argues) they deserve.
“This is art, these are clothes, these are people. Real people being their realist selves, what is more beautiful than that. I won’t stop until you can wear all that (motions to the rubber outfit) to work” – Liam concludes.
MrLiamBoath is notoriously difficult to pin down, “I don’t want an about me section” the website reads, “The work should speak for itself”. With creative influence from Robert Mapplethorpe, Matt Lambert, Greg Kadel, and Zak Pinchin. One thing is clear; Minimalism, representation, progression, sex, and duality are his brand codes. That he seeks out, almost obsessively. “Family portrait” aims to capture this person as who they are, who they chose to be, and how they chose to present and celebrate that without fear or judgment. Like one would, a family photo. “Because anyone who stands up and declares “this is who I am” is worthy of documentation.”- Liam Boath.
